John Johnson

PC John JohnsonThe late PC John Johnson was a very unusual policeman. He was awarded Metropolitan Police Constable of the year, not once but twice for his work in the community in Battersea.

John, a familiar local figure on his bicycle (left), was closely involved in the Panel from the very outset, and it was he who persuaded Michael Ryan to become its first Chairman. It was John’s idea to have a dance for everyone in the community to raise funds for Alarms for the Elderly which was at that time the main project of the Panel.

He was a brilliant networker and to use one of his own phrases, he was “simply marvellous” at getting people together for any reason, be it socially or for the benefit of the local community, and was closely involved in many local organisations and initiatives.

His untimely death in July 2008 was a great shock and sadness to everyone who knew him.

One of John's many achievements was helping to re-establish the Battersea Society in 1998, becoming a trustee. The chair of the Society, Tony Tuck, wrote a tribute to John which can be seen here on the Battersea Society's website.
